Read Baldwin: New Work

June 15th to July 3rd, 2004
Opening Reception: Thursday, June 17,  5-8pm

The paintings in this show are scenes from New Hampshire and Ohio.  The scenes of Ohio reflect the agricultural climate that still dominates this part of the country.  Because the land, even here, is threatened by sprawl, the tone of these images is somewhat melancholy and distant.  Fields, trees, and clouds are viewed as if through the haze of a dream.  They are softened and idealized and distorted as they might be by memory.

The same tone carries over to the images of New Hampshire.  Although here deep space creates a further sense of remove, as if the far off points in the landscape are unattainable.  Dense, dark greenery presents a barrier to easy passage for the viewer. There is a quiet sense of the world receding.

Read Baldwin has been teaching art since 1996 at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. He received his MFA from Pratt Institute where he studied with Ross Neher and Gillian Jagger. At the Vermont Studio School, he studied with Louise Fishman.

Blue Mountain Gallery is located at 530 West 25th Street, NYC, 4th Floor, between 10th and 11th Avenues. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11 - 6pm.
