g-module will present the first solo exhibition in Europe of American photographer Lisa Roy, with a recent series of photographs taken during several self-imposed missions aboard American ocean cruise liners.
Lisa Roy's photographs of cruise ship interiors, shot between 2000-2002, are a symbolic microcosm of the architecture and design found in urban and suburban America: shopping malls, fast food restaurants, hotel lobbies and movie theatres. This "model" of design and architecture, for Roy, was an attempted antidote to post-modernist architecture and design. Yet, from Roy's perspective, it failed to "ameliorate [post-modernism's] desolation, impersonality, and ugliness."
Through the obsessive amassing of marble floors, quasi-doric columns, vinyl arm chairs, veneer tables, imitation metals, shiny mirrors, luminous portals and kitschy textile design, each and all reflecting the excessive "ambient" lighting, the sensation of that failure is apparent. However, the resulting photographs, to the contrary of the actual settings themselves, are images of enchantment and otherworldliness. Thanks to an effective reconstruction of the interiors, the settings are beautiful to the viewer who sees them from a remote place instead of in situ. These works are contemplative portals into a retrospective, futuristic utopia, inviting to one's imagination; whereupon the actual reality may seem on the verge of insanity or a faltering decadence.
Born in Massachussets, Lisa Roy has exhibited in galleries and non-profit spaces throughout the United States and at g-module, Paris last Spring during the well noted exhibition, Days of War, Nights of Love. She holds an MFA in Photography from Yale University and a BFA in Photography from University of Hartford. She lives and works in Washington, DC.
